Wednesday Night Means Trivia Night in Georgia

What do a Mushroom Swiss burger and all-or-nothing trivia questions have in common? More than you think, actually.

Back in Texas, there was a restaurant called Tap Room. It had 42 beers on tap, but more importantly some of the best burgers known to man.

Every Thursday and Sunday, the Tap Room had incredible specials. Thursday was “Buy one burger, get one beer free” and then Sunday was “Buy one burger, get the other half-off.” Thursday was generally one of my lighter days in the office, while Sunday was a day off, so I alternated each week which day I chowed down.

Now that I’m living in Georgia, my days off are Tuesday and Wednesday. Those first few days off, I tried to find the best food specials in town to no avail. As much as I hate to say it, there aren’t any good burger joints in Athens.

Georgia’s loss triggers flood of past sports memories

While watching Michigan State dispatch Georgia last weekend in the “second round” of the NCAA Tournament, I thought back to a few years ago when I went to the Round of 32 on a whim with my roommate. It was held at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, a 45-minute drive from where we lived in San Marcos.

We tried to go the previous year when Austin’s Frank Erwin Center played host, but tickets were hard to come by. My roommate was (and probably still is) a huge Florida fan and the Gators ended winning two games in Texas (beating Northwestern State and Minnesota) en route to the Elite Eight.

Writing Isn’t Writing

So I sat down on my couch ready to write.

I had these grandeur plans about writing a great blog post.

I bounced ideas off a good friend of mine (Todd), but nothing stuck.

March Madness and Spring in Georgia

Forget December: March is the most wonderful time of the year.

Spring has sprung, birds are chirping and it hit 80 degrees in Athens, Georgia.

Plus, it’s time for the annual event where my bracket gets shot to pieces and I lose all but two of my Sweet 16 picks by the “third” round — or whatever they call the old “second” round these days. And by event, I mean the NCAA Tournament. The Big Dance. March Madness. Did I hit all the proper SEO terms? Good.

Finally, the long-awaited WrestleMania tale

Growing up, I loved wrestling.

All right. You got me. I was downright fanatical.

Every weekend over the span of what had to be two years, I picked up a wrestling tape from the movie store (Remember those?) when my parents gave me and my sister free reign of the place.

Not only that, but I staged my own wrestling matches — complete with back stories and all — with stuffed animals. I’m not ashamed to admit that. Putting on an entire card of matches takes skill and creativity. If I remember correctly, Bear and Big Bunny put on some classics — mostly of the hardcore and last-man-standing variety — while Mickey Mouse and Goofy crushed the tag-team division.

You’re totally judging me now, right? Awesome! Let’s move on.

More Responsibility? No Problem

Moving to Georgia forced me out of my comfort zone.

That doesn’t go for just in life, but at work — as I’ve mentioned before.

Recently my bosses wanted to see how I handled the responsibility of designing the A section. Yes, the front page and all of that good stuff.

Was I nervous? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t. Mainly because it was new.

Georgia, Unbeaten Kentucky and The Big Time

Outside Stegeman Coliseum | Kentucky at Georgia

There was a certain buzz around Athens, Georgia earlier this week.

As soon as the Georgia Bulldogs dismantled Missouri last Saturday, the town’s focus shifted to Tuesday’s home finale against none other than Kentucky. Yes, those Wildcats who are kind of good at college basketball (29-0 at the time, No. 1 in the nation and expected to steamroll the field in the NCAA Tournament).

Long before the regular season reached the home stretch, several pundits said Georgia had the best shot at ending Kentucky’s perfect run. While the Wildcats are a super team full of McDonald’s All Americans, the scrappy Bulldogs use enough motion on both ends to where it could throw that kind of team for a loop.

Making It Work On The Side

When I moved to Georgia, I knew the days of my byline appearing daily in the newspaper were gone — at least for time being. That was no longer my job.

Once you’re bitten by the writing bug, like I was at a very young age (but more on that later), it’s impossible to go back to a non-prose life. Melodramatic? Sure. Yet there is just some incredible feeling associated with eloquently piecing together words, whether or not it’s behind a byline.
